Henry Hudson was an 17th century English explorer that explored current day Canada, and the northeastern states. In 1607, and 1608, he made two voyages trying to find the northeast passage in the arctic circle to Cathay, current day china to find a new new trade route for spices. He was commissioned by the Muscovy Company. Both voyages failed due to ice covering the path. On March 25, 1609 he landed in north America in current day Virginia on a voyage for the Dutch East India Company. He found Delaware bay, and then sailed north. Henry did not discover the Hudson river, it was Giovanni da Verrazzano, but he was the first to explore it. He explored it, because, he had thought that it was the northwest passage. He camped on land one night, after he found out that the "Northeast passage" was just a river. He spent the night with native Americans, who broke their arrows to show they meant no harm. He set sail again in April 17, 1610 commissioned by the British East India Company to find the northeast passage. He entered what is now the Hudson strait the June. In July he reached Hudson bay, and thought that it was the pacific ocean. They started sailing about not knowing where to go, and got stuck in ice. After getting out, Hudson wouldn't let the crew go back to england. The crew committed mutiny on June 21, 1611. Hudson, and some of his loyal crew members, and his sons were sent out on a small boat and were never herd from again.
